Hey y'all!~

Friday night at Capone's with Chevy 6 wuz dah bomb!

Chevy 6's
last set at Capone's Friday night
wuz BURNIN' DOWN DAH CRIB!

Sadly, I bet half of the drop dead gorgeous little girls dancing down in front of the stage went to high school with that little girl who got killed in Aruba.
http://www.myspace.com/helpfindnatalee
They had "I JUST TURNED 21 & I'M FROM MOUNTAIN BROOK" written all over them.

When Benji sang HANG ON SLOOPY, I thought about Little Bobby playing keys with Rick Derringer & Phillip Tyler storming the stage and taking the microphone from Benji back when Chevy 6 played THE TOMB on the other end of this block of 4th Street back in the day.

Benji recognized me magnificently when he came on stage and after the gig we hung out together the whole time while he paid everybody off & the entire stage was broken down.

What a wonderful cat.
Benji gave me a super compliment.
The first thing he said to me was ,"Induced Temporary Intersubjective Vulnerability, Man, I read all that shit!"

Anywayzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

So great to be with my good old friend, Ben Burford, Friday night.

Brenda Burford's frugal arthritic brother Benji has a blog that is pure dynamite. You will spend hours on this thing!

Benji has posted his entire Brazilian vacation on the Web!

(ed. note to Burford~ How come that guy on the left looks like a clone of Jimmy Kennamer)

I spent the entire morning reading about his adventures with Bellinger, Robo & Pettus.
Check it out @ http://www.davisdenny.com/bensblog/2008/07/

CHEVY 6 has an incredible juke box at http://www.chevy6.com/songlist.html

BOB!!!
Great to hear from you!
Things are going great, but I'm too busy and arthritic for shit.
Your blog is cool! Keep sending the emails. Every now and then I get a break from juggling flaming balls and get to check stuff out.Chevy 6 still plays! 34 years! A couple of times a month, which is less than I need to, but more than I want to. Especially if it involves traveling. We always come back after the gig, and I feel like I've had a truck parked on top of me all night.Yours,--

Roberto, please ask all your prayer ninjas to say a few words about
Mr. Morgan Freeman, a great actor, great American, a great neighbor of Alison', and mine, and an even greater giving, caring for others man.
He was in a serious traffic accident and needs our prayers.

We were sitting around enjoying John Edwards' misery this morning when one of my buddies told this story about Governor "Big Jim" Folsom.

Some woman was hanging out with Big Jim & his advisors started going, "IT'S A TRAP! IT'S A TRAP!"

Big Jim replied,"Well, boys, you bait that trap with p*ssy & you'll get Big Jim every time!"

Part who knows whatever of Wilbur's interview on WTBC back in July:

Tiger Jack: Buddy, let's talk about the formation of the JAMES GANG & how you got all them together.

Buddy Buie: There was a group up here called the Ramrods.

Wilbur Walton Jr. : From Birmingham.

Buie: Yeah, from Birmingham. Wilbur, you met the Ramrods first, didn't you?

Wilbur: No, I don't think so.

Buie: I remember... as a matter of fact...

Wilbur: We all knew each other because in Dothan at that time were more musicians then than might be in the whole county now. I don't know.

Tiger Jack: Well, there were some good ones come through there for sure.

Wilbur: I don't know why that is. Robert was telling me last night that he knows why but I'll let him write a book on that.

Buie: You had Fred Guarino. You had Bubba Latham.

Wilbur: From Birmingham. They were from Birmingham.

Buie: Yeah, I gotta tell ya, Fred passed away a couple of years ago & it was really strange the way that happened. Jimmy Dean put on a kind of a reunion for the band at his house and there was no music. Everybody just met, ate bar-b-que and drank beer and Fred was there with his wife and he was just as healthy as the day is long. Always, he was a good looking kid.

Tiger Jack: Let's get this straight. Were we eatin' bar-b-que & drinkin' beer at the funeral?

LAUGHTER

Buie: That's what I'm fixin' to tell ya!

Wilbur: What's that stuff you're on down there?

Buie: Well, you're gonna have to forgive me. I'm on medication. Y'all gonna have to forgive me if I say something. Oxycotin is what's really talkin'!

Wilbur: I KNEW IT!

Buie: But we were at Jimmy's party. I hadn't seen any of the guys and I just couldn't believe how good Fred looked.

Wilbur: He sure did. Oh, you're talkin' about Robert Dean's...

Buie: Yeah.

Wilbur: Oh, in Dothan.

Buie: In Dothan and next thing I know somebody called me and said,"Did you know Fred Guarino died?" I said,"Lord no, I didn't know that."
& it was some kind of sudden illness.
I don't remember.
Jack, you were asking about how we got together. It was a combination of a couple of bands that ended up...

Wilbur: The Webs and The Ramrods. You put 'em together.

Buie: The Webs and the Ramrods- there you go.

Wilbur: You took me and Jimmy Dean from the Webs and those three guys- Johnny Mulkey was a guitar player from Marianna.

Buie: Yep.

Wilbur: You took those three guys and us two guys and sent us to Florida.

Buie: Yep.

Wilbur: Close as I can remember.

Buie: Yep.

Tiger Jack: Is this the same time frame as Goldsboro was with the Webs.

Wilbur: That was right after Goldsboro left. See he gotta hit called FUNNY LITTLE CLOWN.

Tiger Jack: FUNNY LITTLE CLOWN, yeah.

Buie: Bobby & us...
When Bobby left to go on the road, it left a vacuum there and Wilbur filled that vacuum as a singer and then the band evolved into a different musical direction by putting the two together- The Ramrods & The Webs.

Tiger Jack: & The Webs became the Candymen somewhere along the line.

Buie: Somewhere along the line, The Webs became The Candymen. We all...
I left Dothan and Bobby left Dothan and we went to work for Roy Orbison. All the band left. Wilbur, of course, being the singer; I don't think Orbison wanted someone to take his place. Wilbur didn't go.

Wilbur: Yeah, I can see me doing PRETTY WOMAN.

Tiger Jack: So Wilbur went on the road with THE JAMES GANG.

Buie: Yeah.

Tiger Jack: & THE CANDYMEN, THE WEBS, got Justo I guess.

Wilbur: They became The Candymen and The Candymen became THE ATLANTA RHYTHM SECTION.

Tiger Jack: Right.

Buie: Yep, yep. There was an evolution there.

Tiger Jack: & all this more or less came out of Dothan, Alabama.

Wilbur: All of it started in Dothan: Buddy Buie & Bobby Goldsboro & John Rainey.

Tiger Jack: & THAT'S MUSICAL HISTORY!

Wilbur: Well, it's the way it happened.

Buie: Dothan, Alabama was where it came... Yeah, Dothan. It all came out of Dothan.
Yeah, it did. Yeah.

Wally: Y'all never did clarify. Was the beer and the bar-b-que at the funeral?

Wilbur: IT WAS IN DOTHAN! WE HAD A REUNION!

LAUGHTER

Wally: I thought they had beer and bar-b-que at the funeral.

Tiger Jack: That's the funeral I want to have and you can leave off the bar-b-que too!

LAUGHTER

Wilbur: I tell you. That wouldn't be bad.

Buie: A sock hop funeral.

Wilbur: Yeah, have a funeral, bar-b-que and beer.

Wally: And when we bury Buddy, we gonna add some oxycotin to it!

Dave: LORD HAVE MERCY!

LAUGHTER

to be continued...

Hey y'all~

I just made a comment on YouTube & I'm looking forward to
the cat I wrote to's response.

This is a good story.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCAq3D-AAbU

Buddy Buie & J.R. Cobb's video from Tommy Wilcox Outdoors using the song called THE DAY BEAR BRYANT DIED will soon have OVER 4400 views on YouTube.

Every day or two I check in on Buie's clip Tommy Wilcox http://tommywilcox.com/website/index.htm
put up on YouTube.
Today somebody had posted the first video link for the clip and some asshole named CoonHater had posted this comment about THE DAY BEAR BRYANT DIED video, "The Bear is DEAD."

The video link is three short speeches by Coach Bryant & players when they accepted the Sugar Bowl & MVP trophies in '78, '79 & 80. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcUi8iiR2cY&watch_response
So I enjoyed the speeches and checked out the other links on the site & saw where a Bryant clip on YouTube had over 100,000 views.

Well I had to see that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp6N__pA8Jc&feature=related
so I click on it
and there's CoonHater again in the comments, "Hey Bammers.....just because you see him speaking on a video doesn't mean the Bear is alive. He is DEAD, just like your program. I pissed on his grave in Birmingham."

But there was another comment by smoothcollected which intrigued me. He wrote,
"listen to that scene when the white Guys were in the bar before Gene hackman bust in and see how the Guy says how a black kid told bear he wanted to play and how bear put him at one end and the team on another and told him if he can make it thru he could play now u tell me what kind of stuff is that for would be strait lace Guy
"

Well as you can imagine,
steam came out of my ears when I read that.

My comments have not gone up on YouTube as of yet but I responded to smoothcollected with comments going something like this:

It's my recollection that those lines from MISSISSIPPI BURNING
were spoken by a character named Floyd Swilley played by the late Marc Clement.http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0166108/

It wouldn't surprise me if the folks who made that movie let Marc write that joke.

Marc was about the most obnoxious worthless fatass scalawag to ever walk the streets of Tuscaloosa.

David A. requested that I comment on the running fight/riot which occurred in the area around Southside Elementary Skrewl a little after 11 P. M. on Saturday night, July 27.

It was a pretty spectacular thing to witness.
Mary Ann & Marbury & I were coming down S. St. Andrews along with all the police cars. The cop in front of us parked in the middle of the street, jumped out of his car and ran directly into the crowd gathered in front of Southside.

I guess they'd had a talent show or something at the CULTURAL ARTS CENTER but it devolved into scrapping in the parking lot. While I tried to wake up David A. who lives in Dr. Ellis's old crib next door to the school, I could hear people hollering in all directions and saw folks running in all directions. After we left David A.'s I bet we saw fifty people standing out in front of Cannon's on Cottonwood Highway.

Never in my life have I ever seen so much mayhem in Dothan, Alabama.

This came out of the Eagle:

Published: July 27, 2008

A Dothan teenager was treated and released at a local hospital early Sunday after he suffered an injury during a shooting near his home, said Dothan police Capt. Larry Draughon.

A 14-year-old boy was treated and released from the Southeast Alabama Medical Center after he suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, Draughon said. The teenager was reportedly shot late Saturday night shortly before midnight near his residence in the area of Hardy Street, located off of Reeves Street.

No charges have been filed in the shooting. Police are looking for another juvenile they believe to be the shooter. Draughon said the other juvenile could face a felony second-degree assault charge.

Hey y'all~

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform everyone in
ZERO, NORTHWEST FLORIDA that
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY,
after almost 2,500 posts and after over 5 years on the Web,
THIS BLOG HAS BEEN CENSORED!

Now Robert Register hasn't been censored but, under pressure, contributors to this blog,
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY,
have requested that I delete their comments.

No problem.

But for all you immoral, sick & feeble minded folks out there concerned about your so-called reputations and your commercial credibility, I've got one thing to say to you:

ROBERT REGISTER WILL STICK IN YOUR
BRAINZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
LIKE A HAIR IN A BISQUIT

AND I CAN DIE TONIGHT BUT IT AIN'T GONNA STOP
YOUR PAIN AND
YOUR NIGHTMARES!

It Came In Through The Bathroom Window: CSI TUSCALOOSA

best,
rr

P.S. If ANYBODY gets fired over this, THE STRANGE GANG
IS
kicking somebody's ass.

R~
WHOA, DUDE...yer gettin censored?! Wear this honor like a crown, my son, considering the thousands that read your page daily.
I say the concerned folks who are worried about their "so-called reputations & commercial credibility", should stick to their "high tea" parties & monthly luncheons...and STAY THE HELL OFF OF YOUR SITE!!
As for me, I'd much rather remember "when we were a little more than foolish & gullible"...and read your blogs.
I'm Out!
Q~

Roberto:
A piece of Dothan music trivia for you to check out.
My sis, Janie, DHS Class o' '59, says that one of her neighbors in Daphne, Ala. (above Fairhope) is David Robinson, who was friends with Jimmy Dean, and who claims he was a member of the original Webs. Says he was there with Orbison hired the band and changed the name to the C-men. Says he "made the worst decision of his life" to forego the opportunity and quit the band and go to Georgia Tech. Can you verify any of this?

RR

That piece about Ideal Bakery across the ditch from John Rainey's house brought back memories.
John Rainey http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=198156299
and I would sit out front in my old Chevy and write songs. We thought every thing we wrote
was a hit and couldn't wait to get out of Dothan to share it with the waiting world. After traveling all over the
world I'm convinced that southeast Alabama is God's country and like John Rainey, I came back home. When
I drive down Main St. and pass the place it all started, I miss him badly. He was one of a kind and without his
positive attitude and encouragement, those songs in my head might have never seen the light of day. David now
carries the torch we lit. Like his brother, he is super talented and the best picker in Dothan. I know John Rainey would be proud of him.

Robert,

Please remove my comments from your blog. I wasn't at
the reunion and had no business commenting on it or
the reunion jam.

Also D. was correct in stating that comments about
something that happened 37 years ago when we were all
a little more than foolish and gullible should not
appear in your blog.

D., please forgive me for inserting my foot in my
big mouth. Robert, please print this retraction and
delete my previous comments.

J.

Roberto ,

before history rolls over it , can you say a few words about the riot you witnessed Sat. night of your reunion . Your description was rather vague .
Thanks,
David A.

Hey evahbody!

I wanna thank y'all and Robert for the great job Sun. @ Cowboys! also Robert, I had a girl call wanting to donate a 100$ toward the Local(mainly Dothan's)Musicians Mural so I'll get up w/ Robin Rainer on who to make the donations to. I agree that we need to try and book Wilbur at some other venues other than Dothan but of course that's ultimately Wilburs' call.Bill Moody mentioned Fred Bocker's interest in booking Wilbur and us at his place(CrossCreek Junction, I believe, near Hwy. 109) where Billy Joe Royal is performing in Oct. Also, to whom it may concern, since I seem to have been thrust into the booking and promotional aspect as well as the musical and rehearsal duties, I have tried to be fair and get all my pickers paid!. I realize Wilbur is the artist and must be paid accordingly but when I first approached him about Robert's '68 class reunion

Wilbur told me he didn't mind singin' a few songs for Roberto since BECAUSE OF ROBERT'S BLOG & AND JIM LANCASTER @ PLAYGROUND STUDIO ,THE "MR. REDBUD CD" WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PROMOTED!!! (HELLO?) So, there, I have vented and feel better,so if anybody out there can get some mo' money and feels froggy, hop on in! In the meantime, my intention has mainly been to help make the music sound as good as possible given the time constraints involved and take care of my pickers who have done their best to donate their time & talents to pullin' this thang off!! (THANK YOU ALL! YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, GREAT JOB!!!),
David Adkins

Great blog tonight!

Great Images and remembrances!

Yes, I had my moments of doubt.

Yes, I hid and I watched.

Yes, you did the dirty deed, against all odds with the cards stacked against you.

Cudos brere' on a great job.

The only thing greater than me being involved slightly was me getting kotched' up with Christopher ( he was ten the last time I saw him) and Kevin Scott, who is such a great talent and friend of the Drewbiedoster)!

Blood's thicker n' mud brere'!

Later...

P.S.

Wilbur never, never lifts that patch unless unless he is completely at home, completely!

He was so comfortable at your promotion that he let every one in and saluted them with that great image of him removing the patch.

Maybe you, after all your absence be resident here.

Yes. resident!
Thanks
Later...

Message from WARTDINGER:

robert,
how the hell is it going? i've enjoyed your blog immensely since i found out
where the hell it was.
your knowledge of la's musicians and local lore is nothing less than amazing.
jim hodges is a very good friend and i've seen several of his posts on your blog.
between the two of you, the music of the 60's, 70's has got to be encapsulated
in your heads.
his knowledge of history and music drove me crazy and now you're in that same genre!
my hat goes off to you. thanks for all the info on the "bands of the south".

it's obvious (duh) that bama is the team, but that's ok,
living in la and the south growing up we were all on one of two sides.
i'm a dye-hard war eagle and i never look at our latest run for being anything other
than it is.
bama-burn has always defied odds and betting, you just never can tell.
bama's damn sure had auburn's # for a lot of years.

looking forward to your pics being posted.

i would have been there but had a heart attack on 6/26 and
i know that's a piss poor excuse, but it's the best i can come up with.

glad your family is doing well and i wish you enough.

Michael

SALLY SANG

Is it high on the mountain
Or down in the limesink?
Are my days for the highway?
Will they go in a dream?
Will a man come & save me
or must I go under,
Or will my mind answer me
with the words I desire?

But
LIFE ANSWERS NO QUESTIONS THAT COME FROM OUTSIDE IT.
& Life Will Never Tell Us What Comes Further Along
So lay down sweet Sally & love your poor body
'cause a light in the tunnel just might burn your sweet smile.

I'll run like a shorebird
Who's looking for footsteps.(Nancy, this is the version that was recorded but the verse I wrote went on, "I'll hide in his sandpath to shield from the wind
I'll live between high tides.
I'll love Gulf's green waters but will my mind
answer me with the words I desire?)
I'll harvest the dark times
I'll fly through the moon

I'll ask all the questions & not expect comment.
I'll live like the old ones and I'll die just like a child.

but
LIFE ANSWERS NO QUESTIONS THAT COME FROM OUTSIDE IT.
& Life Will Never Tell Us What Comes Further Along
So lay down sweet Sally & love your poor body
'cause a light in the tunnel just might burn your sweet smile.
